Wexford on the March

Wexford County County Council is involved with a good number of exciting developments around the county. While work on all has, to a greater or lesser degree, been impacted by the pandemic, the combined effort will add up to arguably the largest county-wide infrastructural development ever by WCC.

These developments include the following:

Trinity Wharf, Wexford for which planning permission has been granted by ABP, with a decision on foreshore application pending.

Enniscorthy Technology Park for which phase 1 works have been completed.

John Street Building Regeneration Project, New Ross (convert old grain store into high quality enterprise hub) – RRDF funding has been secured.

Old Dublin Road Business Park, Enniscorthy – redevelopment – at tender stage.

Templeshannon Regeneration, Enniscorthy – exciting plan which seeks to improve ‘the public realm and streetscape’, look at infill development and put in place a pedestrian bridge to the town centre. Still in early stages in terms of securing funding and naming developers.

Gorey Market House, Gorey. Plan to develop the building. Currently at tender assessment stage (delayed due to pandemic).

Wexford Arts Centre Extension and Renovation – funding in place, preliminary design approved, Part VIII approval granted, contractor tba shortly.

There are plans for enhancement/improvement works planned for High Hill, New Ross; Esmonde Street, Gorey; Monck Street, Wexford; New Ross Fire Station; Wexford’s Mechanics Institute.

Enhancement works at Crescent Quay have been completed. Next up is to dredge the area. (Do we know why it silts up? Dredging might be a waste of money.) Sticking with Crescent Quay, planning is underway for the refurb of the Ballast Office.

Tenders for Wexford Flood Relief Scheme are currently being assessed. (Given the expectation of higher sea levels and more violent storms it is to be hoped that WCC does not hold back in this area.)

On the recreational and amenity front, work has been completed on Min Ryan Park, Wexford and plans are at an advanced stage for the installation of a skate-park and a multi-use games area.

Phase 1 works have been completed at Carrigfoyle Trails & Activity Centre. Indeed, the completion of work on Forth Mountain trails has transformed this whole area.

Infrastructural improvements at Enniscorthy Sports Hub are at the planning and design stage. Wexford Athletics has asked WCC to upgrade the facility so that it may be used for championship events.

Development and upgrade works at Gorey Town Park have been hit by the pandemic – should be completed in next few months.

Enniscorthy has plans for an exciting tourism project centred on the castle. Still at an early stage. There are also plans to improve visitor experiences at Hook Lighthouse and the Irish National Heritage Park.

Initial work on the New Ross to Waterford Greenway is expected to be completed by Oct 2021 (unless there are further virus-related delays) with Spring 2023 given as the final completion date. An application to ABP for the Rosslare to Waterford Greenway will be made later this year. The Wexford Rosslare section is a little further behind but an application is still expected to be made this year.
